③Response paper能帮助训练你读文章和设计文章的思维;
Response paper:
Response paper
Response Paper
Summarize(概括能力):---你能否找到这周所有文献的主题?

Writing Effective Summary and Response Essays
The Summary:
A summary is a concise paraphrase of all the main ideas in an essay. It cites the author and the title (usually in the first sentence); it contains the essay’s thesis and supporting ideas; it may use direct quotation of forceful or concise statements of the author’s ideas; it will NOT usually cite the author’s examples or supporting details unless they are central to the main idea. Most summaries present the major points in the order that the author made them and continually refer back to the article being summarized (i.e. "Damon argues that ..." or "Goodman also points out that ... "). The summary should take up no more than one-third the length of the work being summarized.
The Response:
A response is a critique or evaluation of the author’s essay. Unlike the summary, it is composed of YOUR opinions in relation to the article being summarized. It examines ideas that you agree or disagree with and identifies the essay’s strengths and weaknesses in reasoning and logic, in quality of supporting examples, and in organization and style. A good response is persuasive; therefore, it should cite facts, examples, and personal experience that either refutes or supports the article you’re responding to, depending on your stance.
Two Typical Organizational Formats for Summary/Response Essays:
1. Present the summary in a block of paragraphs, followed by the response in a block:
Intro/thesis
Summary (two to three paragraphs)
Agreement (or disagreement)
Disagreement (or agreement)
Conclusion
Note: Some essays will incorporate both agreement and disagreement in a response, but this is not mandatory.
2. Introduce the essay with a short paragraph that includes your thesis. Then, each body paragraph summarizes one point and responds to it, and a conclusion wraps the essay up.
Intro/thesis
Summary point one; agree/disagree
Summary point two; agree/disagree
Summary point three; agree/disagree
Conclusion
Criteria for Summary/Response Essay for Portfolio 1 (Kiefer)
Purpose - Unlike the summaries that focus solely on representing other writers’ arguments, the summary/response paper allows you to build on a summary with a response to it. The response might analyze the logic of the original essay, or it might argue for or against the position of the original essay. Even if you choose to analyze the logic of the original essay in your response, realize that you must make a case for your analysis, in effect arguing that your analysis is a good one. The purpose of this essay, then, is to build on a summary with an argument of your own.
Audience - Please assume that you are writing for readers not familiar with the original essay you summarize and respond to because your audiences for the essays in Portfolio 2 will not be limited to this class. If possible, please specify a target audience for your s/r essay. (Note the audience in pencil at the top of the first page of the final draft.)
Focus - The most effective s/r essays, like all effective arguing essays, narrow the focus to a manageable size. Even if the essay you are responding to cuts a wide swath through environmentalism, your essay will be more effective if you focus on one or two key points in the original essay. Be sure to select key points from the original essay rather than minor points. In other words, your focus is limited by the focus of the original essay.
Organization - Typically, these essays follow one of two patterns: block or point-by-point. The block pattern has a block of summary, your thesis or claim as a bridge, and then a block of response. Within the response, be sure the arrangement of your points is clear and easy to follow. The point-by-point pattern has a general introduction, a point of summary followed by your response on that point, the next point of summary followed by your response on that point, and so on.
Development - Each of your points must be developed with examples, details, facts, statistics, quotations, etc. You need evidence! Or you might analyze the original argument through a careful chain of reasoning. Please remember, though, that general statements are usually unconvincing; readers expect specific support.
Coherence - Use appropriate author tags and transitions to mark the summary as a summary, and continue to use clear transitions throughout your response so that your argument flows smoothly for readers.
Crafting a thesis statement for the rhetorical analysis paper….
How do I create it? What should it look like?
An effective rhetorical analysis essay includes rhetorical points --points about why, to whom, and how the text is written. The key is to start with your ideas.
Think of several main points you want to make about the way the author has written the article.
Sketch out those points in an initial thesis statement, and
Prepare to develop those points one a time.
Notice that you should arrive at your thesis AFTER reading the article thoroughly several times and after you have done some free writing about your most interesting “hotspots,” (things that elicit a strong response in you about the way the article attempts to convey its message). This helps you to think of the main points you want to make. Don’t just highlight these hotspots; “speak back” to the text of the article by writing your thoughts in the margin or by freewriting about them.
So remember, don’t try to come up with a thesis first, and then figure out how to support for it. First you identify the support (points) and then write your thesis based on them. Look back at all of the preliminary work that you did to generate ideas and questions about your article (i.e., asking questions, discussing it in the forum, brainstorming, freewriting). If you made an idea map or outline, pull it out and review it.
Using your preparatory materials, create a thesis that answers these two central questions:
How does this article use rhetorical strategies to persuade the intended audience? How effectively does this article use rhetorical strategies to persuade the intended audience?
To answer those questions, you will have to figure out the answer to these questions (and probably several others, depending on your piece):
What situation do you think prompted the author to write this piece?
For whom was the piece written?
What did the writer hope to accomplish?
What arguments does the author make?
How did the writer organize this piece? Is the organization effective?
In what ways did he or she attempt to appeal to the readers through ethos, pathos, and/or logos.
How effective were the author’s rhetorical strategies?
How well did the author accomplish her purpose? Do you think the readers’ views were changed based on this article? How might it have influenced them?
(Be sure to view the PowerPoint overview of this assignment if you have not already done so.)
What will my thesis look like?
Your thesis will be a claim about how the article uses rhetoric to persuade. Chapters 9 & 12 in the book are excellent resources for creating strong thesis statements.
Here are a few examples of thesis statements for a rhetorical analysis paper:
George Orwell uses numerous tactics to prove his stance on the decadence of the English language. Initially Orwell seems to be solely analyzing the decay of the English language; however, Orwell effectively uses specific details, structured organization, and logical reasoning to connect this decay to modern politics. By making this relevant connection and by using other rhetorical strategies, Orwell is able to effectively support his claim that the English language is indeed decaying, that this decay holds significance, and that the decay is reversible. (From a Spring W140 student paper; used with permission.)
Grim succeeds at a superficial level because of a brilliant rhetorical strategy involving an appeal to emotion, but his rhetoric falls short for the reader who examines his article closely, due to an error in his logic. (From a Spring W140 student paper; used with permission.)
Although Martin’s argument has relevance for his audience, he fails to convince them because he over-generalizes and over-romanticizes teenage tattooing. He overlooks other causes of teenage tattooing such as commercialization, teens’ desire to identify with a peer group, or their need to achieve an individual identity. (“Why Do Teenagers Get Tattoos?” by Andres Martin)
While Golden mounts a fire-breathing, righteous attack on the culture of super-privilege, this is also a rather conventionally minded view of education. He subscribes to the central assumptions about the Ivy League in America. (The Price of Admission by Daniel Golden.)
If you want faulty information, opinions based on fantasy and a fascist point of view, then this is your book! Friedman ignores all statistics about economic success and makes the concept that the “World is Flat” ignorant and repulsive. It is like saying that playing Monopoly is a 100% accurate view of global economics. (The World is Flat by Thomas Friedman)
Bragg’s personal experiences with steroid use as both an athlete and a coach gives him a credible voice of consequence, reason, foresight, and reputation. Consequentially, Bragg effectively persuades the reader that steroid use is highly dangerous through the use of strong supporting details and examples. (Speech before the Senate Subcommittee on Consumer Affairs, Foreign Commerce, and Tourism on June 18, 2002.)
You’ll find other examples of a thesis for this type of assignment by reading book and article reviews.

Response paper
读后感范文第三段,作者认为Frankl的 “meaning is the most important force in human beings”这个观点,有助于解释当今世界的一些混乱和不满的现象。

《 A novel aqueous co-precipitation process for preparing ITO nanopowders 》
Dear editor,
Thank you for your useful comments and suggestions on the language and the structure of our manuscript. We have modified the manuscript accordingly, and the detailed corrections are listed below point by point:
1) In its current state, the level of English throughout your manuscript does not meet the journal’s desired standard. There are a number of grammatical errors and instances of badly worded/constructed sentences. Please check the manuscript and refine the language carefully.
We revised the whole manuscript carefully to avoid language errors. In addition, the revised and reformulated manuscript has been polished by senior scientist and English teacher. We believe that the language is now acceptable for the review process.
2) Reference style should be as per journal style given in the Guide for Authors. Citations of references in the text should be indicated by the author name together with the year of publication. References should be listed alphabetically by author’s name in the references list. Please submit each individual reference separately. JMPT no longer accepts the use of references cited in lists. Each one of the cited sources must be discussed individually and explicitly to demonstrate their significance to your study. You are required to use the referenced authors’ surnames, and then state in one or two sentences what they claim, what evidence they provide to support their claim, and how you evaluate their work.
Reference style has been revised according to the Guide for Authors. We believe that the reference style is now acceptable for the review process
3) All figures put at the end of the manuscript should be labeled with their names (e.g., Figure 1, Figure 2 etc).
This has been revised in the manuscript. The figures have been put in the paper.
4) Number the pages consecutively.
This has been revised correctly.
The manuscript has been resubmitted to your journal. We look forward to your positive response.
